Netanya will open an art exhibition, “Song of Miriam,” on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 6 p.m., commemorating former mayor Miriam Feirberg-Ikar. Admission is free.

The event takes place ahead of the first anniversary of Feirberg-Ikar’s death on November 21, 2025. She led Netanya for approximately 27 years and in 1998 became the first woman in Israel to win a direct mayoral election.

From social services to City Hall

Before becoming mayor, Feirberg-Ikar worked as a social worker and held senior positions in Netanya’s welfare and education services. Her public career included work with families and vulnerable residents. As mayor, she oversaw years of urban growth and changes to the city’s neighborhoods, public spaces, and cultural and educational services.

At a memorial ceremony in December 2025, the city noted that many residents called her “the mother of Netanya.” Local schools also organized remembrance activities dedicated to her life and work.

Exhibition and opening program

The exhibition explores Feirberg-Ikar’s life, public service and legacy through art. Curator Yonat Goldenberg is credited on the event announcement. The opening program includes an appearance by the “Mram” ensemble and a dance work titled “Miriam” by Havtzelet Netanya. Mayor Avi Slama, city council members and the Feirberg-Ikar family are expected to participate.
